YouTube Drumming Sensation MEYTAL COHEN Working On Second Studio Album
December 10, 2017Los Angeles based heavy-music act MEYTAL, featuring YouTube celebrity drummer Meytal Cohen, has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the creation of the band's second studio album, tentatively due next summer.
Performing as a five-piece, MEYTAL's debut album, "Alchemy", which was also funded on Kickstarter and released in summer 2015, was written by Cohen and Sahaj Ticotin, and peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart, No. 5 on the Hard Rock Albums chart and No. 7 on the Independent Albums chart.
With "Alchemy", Cohen has transitioned from creating note-for-note drum cover videos of her favorite songs, drummers and bands into writing original songs for the first time with a full band. Starting in 2011, Cohen has created over 120 videos, amassed 200 milion views, 1.2 million subscribers on YouTube, and 1.5 million likes on Facebook, creating unique and informative drumming videos and has more subscribers on YouTube than any other drummer.
Cohen explains: "Transitioning from playing my favorite songs to writing my own songs has been the most humbling experience of my life. It has made me appreciate the hell out of bands that have inspired me to become a drummer. It has been an amazing learning experience. At the end of it, I can truly say I didn't take any shortcuts, I gave it my best, and that it came out pretty badass."
The new album marks the beginning of a new journey for the band, one that began last year when the band parted ways with vocalist Eric Emery following a full U.S. tour alongside heavy rock giants QUEENSRŸCHE. Cohen wrote in a Facebook post: "Sometimes people just don't mash. It's not anyone's fault, it's just how it is, and last year it became clear that Eric and the band are going our separate ways."
Taking over vocal duties for the next album is Sahaj Ticotin, producer of "Alchemy" and vocalist/guitarist of the rock band RA, who will also be helm the new disc. Other bandmembers are guitarists Travis Montgomery (of THREAT SIGNAL) and Doc Coyle (of GOD FORBID),and bassist Anel Orantes Pedrero.
Cohen continues: "Being able to create records completely independently through fan support is an incredible experience, I truly believe this is the most authentic most empowering way to create music. I feel incredibly blessed to have been able to forge my own path with the support of my fans from the very first YouTube video to my own original albums."
